Question : How can I change my oil filter?
I own a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. I cant get the plastic cap off to change my oil filter. My oil filter is different then most filters so a oil filter wrench isnt going to work. I looked online all day yesterday and couldnt find anything on this part. I need to know either how to remove the plastic cap or where to find a replacement.
Answer:
It requires a 11/4" (32mm) SOCKET . You can find one on e-bay. Another good place to find one is at Harbor Freight tools. Either at one of their stores, or from their on line site. Sears, or at your local auto supply. Advance Auto parts loans these out (the one near me does). Some others do to. call around. If you like to do your own oil changes, it wouldn't be bad to have your own.

Question : Do I need to tighten my oil filter with a oil filter wrench?
I'm not 100% sure if they're called oil filter wrenches lol. But if you know what I'm talking about. I had like three of them in my garage, but I've seemed to have lost them. My daddy hand tightened it; is that good enough?
Answer:
absolutley, hand tight is fine. If you need a wrench to tighten an oil filter, then something is way wrong. Been fixing cars for twenty two years, seen a lot of people overtighten oil filters, creates nothing but headaches. If after hand tightening, there is a leak from the filter, the gasket may be pinched, or you may have the wrong filter. Never tighten more than hand tight.

Question : Importance of oil filter wrench?
In the service manual for my GSXR it says to turn the filter two full turns after initial contact... which is way more than you can do without the wrench. I usually just hand tighten the filters. Should I go out and buy a filter wrench?
Answer:
Not necessary, plus its usually impossible to get a wrench in there on a sport bike. I twist mine tight by hand. I have never had any leakage, sometimes they are so tight to remove I have to stick them with a screwdriver.

Question : How do you remove an oil filter if you crushed it while taking it off with an oil filter wrench?
It's actually a fuel filter for a John Deere 4020 tractor - but it's basically the same thing - same size, comes off the same way. Crushed it at the very top (where it screws into the tractor).
Answer:
This can be difficult!
Try a strap wrench, if you have not already. When I switched to using a strap wrench instead of an oil filter wrench, things went a lot smoother.
Drive a screwdriver through the body of the filter and turn.
If you tear up the filter enough, you'll be down to its bottom plate. The problem is that the gasket is stuck. Use pliers to pull up on the edges of the bottom plate and un-stick the gasket.
Be careful not to scratch the surface the gasket seats on, and be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp metal edges.
To keep this from happening, before you put the oil filter on, oil the seal with fresh oil, AND just hand tighten it until it is snug, don't tighten it as hard as you can.

i am changing the oil in my 1964 ford fairlane, and the oil filter is stuck on, i used an oil filter wrench, and it just dented the filter in! i need help asap so i can get the car out of the garage

Answer:
a large pair of channel lock pliers will also remove it,i usually just drive a screwdriver through the whole thing and turn it that way,it makes a big mess but it has to come off,its easier if you can use a grip tight oil filter wrench on it those will bring it right off, good luck.

Question : Do I need a oil filter wrench to change oil on 2008 Mazda3?
Going to change oil on this car for the first time. Do i need a wrench to get the oil filter off, or can I use any old filter wrench?? Also don't need a gauge to put it back on do I?
I meant do i need a specific type of filter wrench?????
Answer:
you may need a specific wrench, or oil filter cap/cup, to remove the filter, depending on engine size. If my memory serves me correctly some of engines in the Mazda3 are the type that take a cartridge filter instead of a regular spin on filter. Check to see which filter you have before deciding what wrench to buy. hope this helps!

Question : How am you supposed to get a grip on this oil filter cup wrench?
I bought it from Halfords.
It has 14 flutes, is 76mm, 3/8D, and it fits perfectly and tightly on to my car's oil filter.
Problem is... it's got a square bit at the top, but what is supposed to go in there so I can get something in to turn it?
I've got a breaker bar (1/2), and a load of sockets. I really need to get some leverage going cause my filter is really tight on. That's why I got this cup wrench.
Please help!
Thanks.
Here is a picture of it:

Ahhh... cause of that knobbly bit on rachets and breaker bars... I didn't think they went straight in to square holes like on the filter.
I'll give it a go - thanks. Be back later to review best answer.
The knobbly bit on the rachet (and my 1/2 to 3/8 adapter on breaker bar) has distored the square hole in the cup filter.
The slot on the filter too shallow in depth to get it in the end. :(
OMG - was a close thing, having to have the 3/8 bit half in, and half the cup on the filter in order to get both grip on the filter and leverage... but got the filter off. THANKS ALL !!!!!!!!
Stupid design... that cup didn't have enough room for the 3/8 head, whilst keeping a tight grip.... I'm gonna complain and get my money back and get a better version with a deeper area for the 3/8 head.
Answer:
This is purely an old trick that can work, seeings the answers you have are good ones, use a sheet of sandpaper around the filter it gives so much more grip and leverage Be lucky

Question : how do you change an oil filter in a scion?
Oil filter is inverted in the scion. Do you have to empty oil from engine before removing filter? I changed oil last week, but didn't have right size filter wrench. Now I want to change the filter. Do I have to re-change the oil?
Answer:
No, you don't need to change the oil, unless you drove 2000+ miles in the last week ... The oil in the oil pan will not be affected by removing the oil filter, the engine needs to be running for the oil pump to push oil to the filter. The filter in your Scion holds less than 1/4 of a quart (including the oil in the line). After replacing the filter, start it until you see oil light on dash go out (check filter for leaks), turn it off - check oil level. A good rule of thumb to remember - always better to be a little low than a little over full (the crosshatched area on the dipstick is 1 qt) 1/4 qt shy is better than 1/4 qt over... But, you will hurt nothing by changing only the filter at this time. It is, however, better, to change both at same time in future...
